Wow. Almost the exact same thing happened to me. XMAS used 40K for a ticket for mom to go LGB to BTR but delays would have caused her to misconnect. UA240ed her ticket to the flight I was on and put her in First. It really took a lot though to get them to 240 a free ticket.
