As for value for points..

Say for business class return to the US:

= 67,500 miles (cash only)
= £33,750 spend
= £422 in HMRC surcharges

So would you pay £422+taxes for a business class return with stopovers each way and flexibility to change / cancel up to week before departure (I would have thought so!)
