Hard to change flights in Lima, Peru or Santiago, Chile?

I am getting ready to book a ticket from LAX down to EZE. To save some money , I will probably go with LAN and change planes down in SA somwhere.

Does anyone have experience changing flights in either Lima, Peru or Santiago, Chile?

I am assuming that I could transit from one international flight to another without going through customs or jumping through other hoops. Are there any problems with this?

I know that Chile as well as Argentina, now charge a reciprocity fee. If they force you to go out thru customs in Santiago, do you have to pay the fee or can you just declare that you are in transit?

Best regards,
Max
