Generally, no. Partner miles don't typically have an impact on your elite status. The AA situation is unusual: total lifetime miles from any source count towards Million Miler levels.
Airlines vary on how they do comps, matches, challenges, etc. They are also extending more "elite lite" perks via their co-branded credit cards than they used to. A couple offer EQM-earning paths through CC spend but that's the exception rather than the rule.
To keep this ON TOPIC, how does this sort of thing compare from Hyatt to Marriott?
I'm no Hyatt expert. I don't believe they have a parallel to the Marriott TP. One thing I do notice however: Hyatt seems pretty active in partnering directly with airlines to offer good promotional bonuses directly in mileage form. I get emails from UA a couple times a year....sometimes as juicy as a flat 5,000 miles per stay. There's a good WN one going on too and probably others I'm not aware of.
Most of the best Marriott promotions yield either free hotel nights or bonus Marriott points. I've never done a Marriott stay where I found it advantageous to wipe out my MR# and provide an airline number.
