Couple of ways to do this and it depends on where you are flying from, your time commitments etc.
1) Like other s have said fly into another European city and catch a budget airline (I like vueling if I'm flying to MAD or BCN). Or fly from a different US city that has a cheaper flight to BCN.
2) Spend some time on the trick it thread to get a better deal on your trip.
3) Fly into MAD and take a bus or train (usually more expensive).
Hard to say what is best without know more about you.
