I think it is a nice gesture, although as with the other cases, there were no takers for the pre-boarding. It seems that GA have the discretion to do this, I'm ok with it, I just find it curious that GA's can just decide to do this sometimes and not other times.
Had it happen out of EWR last week -- awkward pause and all. Followed by the DirecTV script with everything except the reminder to grab your headphones out of the scavenger hunt bin.
The military call-out is great -- but as said before -- why not just lump it with first class boarding.
