I have a UK-issued IDC and it was my understanding that the travel and medical insurance covered you regardless of whether you charged the ticket to the specific card, as long as you were traveling outside your country of residence. In fact, you don't even have to travel by air.

For example, if my husband and I travel from our country of residence (Denmark) to the UK via ferry, we would have insurance coverage while traveling in the UK.
