According to information easily available on AA.com (just click here), the dimensions of your checked bag must add up to less than 62 inches. 20+15+15=50. So your box is not too big.

I've traveled with a box as one of my checked bags several times in the past. No problems. Just make sure that the box is clearly labeled. (I usually just tape a business card to it.)

As a Gold member, whether or not you get the upgrade is irrelevant. Gold members do not pay for the first two checked bags, whether they've been upgraded or not.
