you could do Asia to Europe via the US and vv or Europe to Australia via the US and a SWU will be good for the entire one way trip, so a good way to rack up a bunch of miles (a mileage award upgrade would require 2 where a SWU will only require one...)

i have seen someone burn a SWU on as short a route as LAX-SFO as well...
