I guess Citi is the place to ask but their CSRs are so unreliable. I couldn't find anything in writing on their website.
I would hate doing a challenge just to discover that it was a waste of money (I don't care for the Gold otherwise).
Try to search in both AA forum and Miles Buzz forum - the latest one was a guy started a thread in AA forum asking about this when he anticipated big business related travel spending coming. People were telling him including one personal experience that he would not get the cap lifted. The poster said he would fight on that but he never posted back so he did not win would be my natural guess.
If you are really set to do a challenge - AFTER you get the status then get another card so that card would have 100K cap. Whether you can get another card though is an entirely different issue.
BTW, now it costs $200 fee to do a challenge.
