I actually have had this happen to me a couple of times. Once I was placed in BC on a United Transcon when I was confirmed with a sticker upgrade (this was about 2 years ago).

Last year I was faced with being re-routed again on a UAL transcon but they told me they would now only offer coach as United has stopped honoring upgrades from other airlines. I was pretty surprised that they ever did in the first place.
