My key remaining question is: if we get to the gate, and given the number of available seats and our ranking on the list, it looks like we won't clear, can I just pay the $75 same day confirmed change fee for each person right there? Is there a specific point in time before the flight where that option goes away?
Not sure if this is the actual UA answer, but reservations are null if a passenger is not checked into them 30 min prior to dptr. This is when the DM list is worked, so I guess I would say about 40 min, enough time to get thru any line, change your reservations, pay the fees, then get checked in and still be outside of the 30 min window, where the agent should be processing off of the DM, and not allowing any addl checkin.
