Socrates' reply, this is most likely a misinformed or over zealous phone agent. As always, I'm not sure I would take as gospel what a single phone agent tells someone during a phone conversation.
I guess you could try calling the elite line for ever reservation you have this year and then let us know if you noticed any difference in your upgrades.
