I had similar experiences with the US call center a couple of weeks ago - one agent changed the reservation without hesitation, while another told me you lose the upgrade if you try to change the date of an MFU'd return. I guess it's all down to chronic bad training, but I KNOW it can be done so the answer is hang up and call again, if you can handle the lengthy hold times for US reservations.
