As a hint if you do stay at the the Holiday Inn Madrid it is in the middle of a block and so you can accees the main entrance from all sides, taxi drivers might get thrown sometimes looking for the small entrance.
+1 for this advice.
I have stayed several times at HI Madrid in preference to those 'near' the airport, and can recommend it. Of course it is far more central and within walking distance of most of the downtown attractions. Also the Madrid Metro is a clean, efficient and cheap (esp compared with some European cities...) way of getting into the city and to this hotel from the airport. I have done this several times with luggage and it is not a problem.
If you really prefer something close to the airport and don't mind straying from the brand, the Hotel Clement in Barajas town is a good choice. It has a shuttle service from/to the airport, and is less than 10 minutes easy walk from the Metro, just 1 stop from the airport. Also a few nice restaurants nearby.
