My wife just booked a ticket for travel more than a week out...She's on a SFO-ORD 767 (3 class) that was C7 J7, yet had NC3 when she booked it. There were only 3 seats to choose from--F was wide open, so they'll probably move people up, but she was PLEASANTLY surprised to be able to secure the NC space that far in advance with so few seats remaining.

She used a CR-1 (nice having 2 1Ks in the family now!!!!!), but wondering if it's a function of miles+copay. I have no idea, but I like it.
