That's debatable but the subject for another thread.
My feeling is that as long as they utilize the "club cards" in order for one to obtain discounts on weekly specials over and above the "EDLP" items they are still gathering data about shopping preferences and habits. That data is worth something. I always felt the miles were a trade-off for me to provide Safeway with that data. Without any further incentive to be reimbursed for the marketing data I provide Safeway I will probably be looking at other options for grocery shopping. Personally I would never set foot in a Wal~Mart but there is a Super Target not too terribly far from me that may be getting more of my business in the future and I have sent an e-mail to Safeway telling them as much.
