Below is the disappointing response I received to an e-mail to customer service which was similar to my original post on this subject. I must say that I was not expecting a form letter to a different query (and a policy that went into effect over 12 months ago!)

*******************************************
Hello

As you've noticed, we have changed our preboarding procedures. We previously made a single announcement for first class, AAIRPASS and AADVANTAGE PLATINUM and AADVANTAGE GOLD customers to board at their
leisure, regardless of cabin of service. We now invite first class customers to board immediately after those passengers requiring a little extra time to get settled in. When the aircraft features three classes of service, business class customers are asked to board soon after first class customers. AAIRPASS and AADVANTAGE elite members traveling in the main cabin are invited to board next, at the beginning of the general boarding call.

We think you'll appreciate this refinement when you are traveling in first or business class, and you'll still enjoy the recognition and early access you've come to expect when traveling in the main cabin.

Whether you are traveling this holiday season or staying at home, we wish you all the best as the new year approaches. Happy Holidays!

Just to let you know, if you simply 'reply' to this message, it may delay our response to you. Please use our e-mail link on aa.com.

Regards,

Shirley
