I've gotten the change fee waived, but called back 3 times to find someone sympathetic enough. Sounds odd but try the non elite line, I actually finally got luck through them. Don't expext a refund though, at best a credit or apply it to a future fare. As others mentioned, bearevement fares can be higher than what is readily available, so keep that in mind.
