Skoda might be probably "old school". Most modern diesel engines use the diesel fuel as a lubricant for the fuel pump (amongst other things). Trust me, it's worse to put gasoline (petrol) in a diesel engine.
There's also the situation where the gasoline pre-ignites before the cylinder reaches top dead center due to the higher compression ratio, which creates massive knocking...

If a petrol nozzle fits in diesel, but not the other way around - I'm inclined to believe diesel in petrol causes far more damage.
