Slightly crafty though making it like a old divining rod, which my grandfather used to find water in michigan (dig deep enough and anywhere will do).

A simple double blind test of fixing the rod on a tripod and moving explosives past it would prove it didn't work.

And then RFID "cards" to detect various items....again crafty.
