If you want to visit Melbourne from Sydney, either take the train of fly and you don't need a car when there.

If you want to visit the Great Barrier Reef, it is a 3 hours flight from Sydney to Cairns. From there it might be a good idea to rent a car and to drive to Port Douglas and Daintree National Park.

Driving in Australia is easy just be aware that chances of getting a speeding ticket are higher here than anywhere else I have ever seen.
