We used to do a bit lock encryption of the drive and then a five wipe pass erase. I don't think that would ever be broken, but putting the drive in a safe deposit box is always best. Putting it in the drawer of your home is WORSE than doing a 5+ wipe IMHO.
you can believe the spudge from the previous poster, or read this. The NSA crushes & melts down the keyboards of any device that is going to be fully DESTROYED before they send them out. I wonder why they would be concerned if not for some granted miniscule chance of some form of password recovery from the keyboards.
