Regarding name changes, is it ever possible to do a name change on a non-refundable for a fee? If so, and the fee was less than $250ish, the less-expensive fares would still be about a break-even proposition with the TA rates (which, if you didn't see my other post above, seem to match what AA gave me directly).
I am not aware of non group tickets that allow passenger changes, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. You might want to ask that question on our American Airlines forum here. Crossposting is against the rules, so I would suggest just asking that specific question rather than reposting your entire post, and maybe including a link to this post to see if it stirs up more involvement by some AA experts.
