You can do a few things:

1) At check-in gate ask the agent if it's possible to shift your seats to seat together

2) On board ask the people sitting there whether or not they mind changing seats for you so your family can be together.

Usually when people ask me that I am willing to change to keep the family together, unless it's a crappy middle seat.
