The lake is only 72 miles around, so half way is about 36 miles. That's not such a long distance that north or south would prevent you from visiting places on the other side. I've biked around it many times in the past. It definitely makes the lake seem smaller.

Tahoe City on the North Shore is closer to Alpine, Squaw, and some smaller resorts (Homewood has gorgeous lake views from up top). Over at Incline Village you have more resorts, and Northstar is off of 267 not far from Tahoe City or Truckee.
The other thing about Homewood and Incline Village is that they are relatively cheap resorts. I've been to Incline Village. Though it was smaller than a resort like Heavenly, I really didn't mind.
OTOH, at Heavenly, you can ski or snowboard across the California/Nevada state line. That's pretty cool

Reno? Plenty of hotel/casinos there, too, and you could use it as a gateway to the Mt. Rose ski resort. Carson City? There's nothing there except the state capitol buildings. Probably a great place to live, but not a place to base yourself for touring.
