Well thats the next step in the expansion. The TSA will ask for money to have drones hovering over all US airspace with the ability to destroy a passenger jet at the click of a mouse.
It will be part of the Secure Flight Surveillance Program which will be forthcoming in the next budget.

Would it really be possible to scramble drones to intercept a flight if some such thing did happen? I always got the impression they were very slow flying robot planes that flew slowly to save fuel.
And on that side note as well, how many areas of the USA do you think are within a 1 hour scramble window for fighter jets? (ie if we had imminent warning of a terrorist incident could the airforce/air national guard get a plane to that location within the hour?)
