If it's two PNRs it's not going to automatically generate the tag. So the agent would have to do it manually. The OP is talking about a single PNR.

Anyhow, not sure how they would put 6 segments on a tag anyway, so since the agent saw that, it was probably a judgment call not to do it.

Had you booked KIX-SFO on one, and SFO-CLT on the other, then I'm pretty sure most agents would tag the bag through as a courtesy. Remember that checking bags through to another PNR is a courtesy that they typically do, but it's not something they have to do.

I've never had much trouble doing it, but when I do it, it's usually UA nonstop connecting to another carrier's nonstop.
