To have status until 3/2011 you must have already qualified before the Dec 31 2009.
The March date is an extra 3 months given to those who have acquired status its totally irrelevant to any dates involving the qualification period.

Thanks for quick anwsers from freakazoid and MIKESILV.
I forgot to mention I am thinking upgrade to HH gold with AMEX Hilton Surpass (upgrade from no fee AMEX Hilton).
My first hilton stays probably won't happen until May.
So looks like I should wait till Apr 1 (if upgrade promotion won't expire soon) if I want to keep HH gold longer and play safe.
