Splitting a check is a common function on restaurant POS systems, not so much on retail systems; I've never tried it, but you might get push back from Walmart if you try to split your 50" HDTV over multiple cards. I have used gift cards at Best Buy to pay for a portion of the total with the balance on my CC - never tried with two separate CCs though.

Also many smaller establishments have simple CC terminals where they manually enter the charge amount so it is easy to divide the total and enter multiple amounts for the total.

But to stay on topic, I certainly think United is at fault here, but getting a cash refund is going to be difficult. OP will likely need to push this up a few levels and it will take some time. Personally I'd be happy with the $250 cert - or maybe push for another $100 to cover my overdraft expense ($250 for the CS gesture, $100 for "reimbursement").
