I'm working on a possible pleasure trip to YYT (St. John's, Nfld) for mid-May, and in examining my flight options my most logical USA/Canada entry/exit points are Toronto or Halifax. While I suspect things will change between now and May given the current USA-entry hysteria after the Christmas Day events, I'd still be interested in the following:

(1) Opinions on "hassle factor" at YYZ vs. YHZ both upon entering Canada from the USA, and exiting.

(2) Layover time I should allot for connecting flights at each airport given (1) above. Bear in mind that I may have to change Airlines at either airport if I elect NOT to use Air Canada on my flights to/from the States; whether YYZ or YHZ, I expect to use AC to get to/from YYT...Westjet doesn't look great for this based on my early research, and I'm not thrilled with using CO via Newark (3 hours on ERJ!).

(3) Help understanding the baggage claim/re-check req'ts (and for that matter, carry-on limitations) at the entry/exit points.

(4) Any other related discussion/opinions.
