Never check your boots, unless you have off-the-shelf pieces of crap. Any skier who has invested in boot fittings or custom footbeds will ALWAYS carry their boots on. You can rent skis & poles, but boots? No way Jose.
My rule is similar. I will only carry them when I'm going to ski, on the return I have no problem checking them in. I also have pretty pricey boots and custom insoles. If I had to rent boots, my ski trip would be miserable.
