Point I was making was that the OP could have used the free night at the Sheraton SIN if the St Regis was not available for redemption. One does not always need to go for the highest category redemption to achieve satisfaction just like I used the free night to extend my stay at a Cat 3 hotel and still had a good time.
I am sure I may be a "cheapskate" in my own way but since you asked, yes I have thrown away free nights many times before and sometimes I even paid for my stay instead (for stay credit). I have also left to waste invitations/vouchers for muitiple-night stays at some pretty nice hotels/resorts (some with all meals included) because I didnt want to upset my other plans. Now you really made me feel "superior" , thanks
