If you go up a level or retain a level or drop a level then for the purpose of requalification you are reset to zero at the start of your membership year. When you go up a level your membership year changes. When you retain or drop a level your membership year remains the same.
I hope this clarifies.
Sorry to labour the point, but I'm curious about this as well. I only started crediting flights to airpoints in July last year; since then I've earned 840 status points, with silver status due to commence from Jan 31st / Feb 1st. Right now my status indicator says "to upgrade to Gold, 60 needed if earned today".
Presumably, I have until the end of June to earn those 60 status credits to bump me up to gold, right - and that's not going to change once my silver status kicks in? I'd like to qualify for gold later rather than sooner, so that my gold status stays valid as late as possible as I don't get to fly NZ very frequently these days so I'd hate my upgrades to go completely unused. On the other hand, I don't want to miss out due to my own inability to understand NZ's system!
