My experiences that on non rev tickets such as awards, they will not put you on another carrier. The reward ticket has no "value" therefore any other airline would get no revenue. I doubt AA would pay to put you on another flight and I doubt any other airline would be charitable enough to take you for free especially in C or F.

Luckily I've not been in this position so I have no pratical experience.
