I guess I feel that these second tier markets in China represent the next big opportunity so I applaud airlines that proactively establish themselves in them.
I fully support the move for direct flights to 2nd tier cities as well, as it would make my life easier, but just not sure they are viable yet. I agree that they represent the next big opportunity in China, so should see some interesting routes in the coming years as airlines test the waters.
I would look to India for an example of how China may develop. The biggest cities will all get clusters of direct flights, while the smaller cities only connect to regional hubs. You can fly direct from Europe to BOM/BLR/DEL/MAA/KOL/HYD but smaller cities only have intl service to hubs like DXB/SHJ/SIN etc.
