One main reason is for overhead bin space. If F is boarded first, you can pretty much guarantee that pax in row 17 won't put their rollaboard in the F bins.
Another reason, for me anyway, is I like getting on the plane and getting settled rather than just standing or sitting in the gate area waiting. That's just me though, YMMV.
