I can remember that, on my grandparents' farm, swedes were sold for human consumption while turnips went for cattle and pig feed!

Mind you, back in the 1960's, you would have had a job selling white potatoes - shops liked the purple-eyed look with yellow flesh that, when mashed, just needed a hint of butter to produce the lightest, fluffiest texture. Interestingly, the "King Edwards" and "White Potatoes" so beloved by Sainsburys, Tescos et al, were grown principally for animal feed in the by and by - I think Cadbury's "Smash" had a lot to do with the perception that mashed potato should be snowy white, soggy and tasteless!

......but then, I've gone wildly off-topic!

What I would like to know is, when will British Airways wake up to the fact that the genuine Dewdney's Cornish Pasty would actually reduce their costs as a substantial economy meal on short haul or domestic services? Can you imagine an afternoon flight - Cornish Pasty followed by scone, clotted cream and jam? It wouldn't cost a lot, would return British Airways to being proudly British and show the foreigners that Britain really does have a food heritage to be proud of!

...............Suddenly, I'm rather hungry!
