Actually I think that is pretty weird in the overall scheme of tourist travel. Not at all weird in the world of Flyertalk.

10+ years ago I knew an immigration inspector at the Bluewater Bridge (Port Huron, MI). He told me a similar story of an elderly couple that returned from a week in Toronto and declared absolutely nothing. They searched the car and found 100 or so beanie babies (popular for resale back then) stuffed under the spare tire. A few bucks of duty turned into confiscation and fines.
