Hi ORD1Kguy,
AA has had 747-100s in service when this model first came out in the early 1970s. AA has used it mainly for its transcon service. The F class cabin even had seats that could swivel and become a table-for-4 during meal time. The upper deck was a real lounge, like the fashion for other airlines in those days. Those were the days of air travel.
Not only AA had used this early model 747, DL, CO, NA (the old National) all had it in service for a short while, too. It proved to be too big for some of them. DL later swtiched to L-1011s, CO and NA to DC-10s for wide-body service. Of course, PA, TW and UA also used this model. UA kept the 747-100 in service, so did TW. I'm not sure if the 100s are still in service for UA and TW. PA, well...it folded altogether.
One of the old AA 747s is/was used by NASA to piggyback the shuttle. I've seen many old AA 747s used in films when a 747 was needed. I believe the movie "Airport" (the first one) and its sequels have used old AA's 747s.
I cannot remember when AA stopped flying the 747-100s. It did resume 747 service again with 747SPs between DFW and NRT (Tokyo) in the early 80s. It has now stopped flying any version of the 747. I am sorry I don't have the exact years when it started and stopped.
I hope this can be of some help. You may also check with AA. Their PR department is pretty good about answering questions of this sort.
