it seems like, in order to fix this, AS shouldn't encourage you to buy the miles until immediately prior to ticketing. i.e. a message like "the itinerary you have selected requires 25K miles; you have only 24k miles available in your mileage plan account. You will be given the option to purchase the additional 1k miles as the final step of this transaction. Would you like to proceed?"
