I believe that the main reason for BKK not doing well despite the high pax numbers is that BKK is primarily a holiday destination, and as such attracts very little high yield business passengers.
There are direct flights from Europe to most major Asian cities, so having an extra connection in BKK - and having to stand the holidaymakers in a longhaul flight - is not very attractive for most business passengers.
