I got kicked back maybe 3 or 4 times by Japanese banks then I applied for a Citibank card and I got approved the next day (I don't even think they called my work) for 50万. Then, 9 months later, I applied for a pitapa card (the basic one, where the determination is made by Sumitomo Mitsui, which is notoriously difficult to get a card from).
Many people say that Citibank is easy and SMBC is hard -- but I was denied a basic Citibank card last year, yet got an ANA card from SMBC just a couple of months later. There are many, many factors at work in these credit determinations.
