Well from somewhere like DUB or AMS you wouldn't have the APD but you'd still have the cost of getting there - including the lesser APD to Europe. And it would need to be on a separate ticket so you wouldn't be able to check your bags through, and if you miss your connection you're stuffed. Other taxes will be similar but not identical.

Not worth it in my view unless you fancy an overnight in your connecting city.
