What to do if award flight is available on AA but not BA, using BA miles?

Disclaimer: I am new to BA, thanks to the generous BA Chase Visa offer. As many of you know, it is a learning curve when you start a new frequency program.

When I try to make a sample booking for GRR to KOA (US to Hawaii) on AA I see plenty of award options. When I try to book those same dates on the BA website I get this message:

Error
British Airways and its partners do not fly this route. Please consider alternative destinations or call your Executive Club Service Centre.

Does anyone know why? I verified the flights and they are all AA flight numbers.

Is it going to do any good to call BA? I then have the $20 call center fee per ticket (times three tickets).
