This part is key. Do not bad mouth the landlords (though they are deserving of it) until you have your deposit back. As an aside, there are rules and regulations in San Francisco regarding renting one's home on a non-regular basis. If they refuse to give your deposit you may want to look into this further. Of course, I do not know their exact situation and how the home is registered in SF.
