I have flown a few times on CA between JFK and PEK and within China (PVG-PEK-CTU) on award travel and this is what I think worked best for me: Go to the CA website and find an itinerary (CA flight #, date, time) that suits you. Then call UA CSR to request assistance booking an award travel on CA. S/he will ask you the destination and the specifics of your preferred itinerary and you just give them what you found on the CA website. They'll plug it in and find the itinerary. If it still not sold out and/or it is eligible for award travel, they tell you that they have made a request to CA for it and that you would be contacted in 24-48hr if CA does or does not confirm. Each time CA confirmed for me, even when they were still a partner and not a full *A member. I should add that between JFK and PEK I'd requested economy, and within China it was always C or F and they all usually confirmed within 24 hr.
