I hope that one of the reservations and ticketing people here will step in and answer, but my understanding is that any published Y fare code (including Y-something) should upgrade at time of purchase (not reservation) if there is availability for "domestic" flights (including Canada and Central America, etc. but not Hawaii). Call the Plat line and ask until you get an answer that makes sense. Check ExpertFlyer if you can.
