All my transatlantic flights in the past have always been in Y and never could justify paying $4000+ for an execute class, so I figured that it would be better to use my points instead. (just a 25K premium, which seems OK). So I start looking at dates for direct flights from YYZ to CDG.. Most have connections in YUL and the transatlantic portion is in Y, yet they charge the full J class fare...

Finally, after some long searching (since the availability calendar doesn't work for J searches only), I find a direct flight available in Oct and settle for a return from BRU (which is fine since I will be in Northern France anyway, so closer in some sort..). So I end up booking my flight, get 1A which I immediately call to change for 2A (I heard 1A is too close to washrooms/Galley).

Then a few days later, I check to see how much my flight would cost in full fare and see that the only seat taken on both flights is mine. This means that no one else is booked in that cabin, yet, when trying to book a second seat for the same flights, the results come up empty (except in Classic plus rewards at 330 000 points or something ridiculous like that...)

So how do couples book flights on J when just one is available?

p.s. I hope I picked good seats: 2A on A330 and B767 (I'll be alone, so I like that extra wall for privacy). Looking forward to testing those pods :-)
