In my case, I'm crashing from 1K down to 2P. Or at least I was...with this offer they gave me 1P status for 2010 and the ability to move back up to 1K if I travel the 5K in a high fre class.

To take advantage of the offer, I have to register by Feb 28 and then have 90 days to fly the 5K. The status is good until Jan 2011, so the earlier I do this, the more time I'll have as a 1K. At the same time, I'm clearly not traveling nearly as much as I used to, so I guess I'm not really in all that much of a hurry...
Sometimes United offers business or first class fares for the price of coach. Well, it's not really that, but it is still a good deal. Last summer, I took a flight from IAD through DEN to Portland, Oregon. Cost: about $800 and the mileage would have been about 5000.

So wait a little while and see if they offer that again anytime soon. If not, you have lots of other suggestions.
